Best tips for new and current quilters and how to WIN free quilting supplies!!!

Tips for New and Current Quilters:

1.  Take a quilting class (for ex:  from Harriet and Carrie Hargrave) and learn from others hands-on.

2.  Start off on a small project.

3.  There are no quilt police, do what pleases you.

4.  Starch is your best friend.  Mary Ellen's Best Press is best of all!
Press, don't iron.

5.  Develop basic quilting skills such as using a 1/4 inch seam allowance for piecing, accurate cutting and pressing skills.  Harriet and Carrie Hargrave's "Quilter's Academy Series Freshman Year" teaches all these skills.

6.  Buy the best tools you can afford and you will probably only have to buy them once.  (Or win them at www.sewwequilt.com!  See how below.)

7.  Don't be too ambitious first out. Start small and simple. Try to add a new technique with each quilt. Be kind to yourself! Quilting should be something you love, not a chore!

8.  Become friends with your seam ripper!

9.  Get an experienced quilting buddy!

10.  Enjoy the process and don't be too hard on yourself.

11.  Don't forget your library can be a good, free resource for the basics.

12.  Don't point out your mistakes to people. They won't notice if you don't show them!

13.  Quilting is a pleasure, not work. When it feels like work, step away for awhile.

14.  Measure twice, cut once.

15.  If you aren't making mistakes, you aren't learning.

16.  Perfection is for God.  We are human.  Mistakes are expected.

17.  Your sewing machine is your most important tool for sewing. Keep it clean and well oiled.  Take it in for servicing once a year.

18.  Find a space where you can sew without taking down all the time.

19.  Quilt with cotton fabric and cotton thread.

20.  3 foot rule - stand back 3', if you can't see it from there it's good enough! lol

21. Finished is better then purfect!

22.  Join a local guild of kind, supportive quilters.

23.  Make a difference.  Quilt for charity.  Recipients won't care if there's a mistake or two...it's the thought that counts!

24.  Have fun!
