My son had to give grandma's pillow a test run for softness. It met with his approval :-)
In the summer of 2010, I was busy organizing a quilting area as Harriet and Carrie suggested in their "Quilter's Academy" Freshman Year. Naturally, I asked my Mom if she had things I could use. She gave me her sewing box from the 1970s and my grandma Adeline's sewing and embroidery box. I found two blue anchors and one little red and white sailboat that my mother had sewed onto a white 1970's eyelet swimsuit cover up that I remembered from when I was about seven years old! I just knew I had to create something for Mom with the two left-over blue anchors and little sailboat. I decided on a nine-patch pillow for both front and back and found an anchor design for hand-quilting. I used my sewing machine for stitch in the ditch. Mom was a Coast Guard Auxilary commander back in the day and has always loved lighthouses, so when I saw this fabric, I knew I had to use it!
Here's the back with the cute little sailboat.
I sure had fun making this little pillow. It's the first thing I quilted since a quilt I designed, embroidered and quilted by machine when I was an 18 year old going off to college.
